born at Bloomfield, N.J., 1 Apr. 1835, died 28 Apr. 1877; married 22 Sept. 1859,
SARAH JANE SHERWOOD, born 29 June 1836.
He was graduated from Yale College, 1857, and soon after became connected with
//The New York Times,// where he was promoted to more and more responsible
positions. He was for a time the literary editor. His capacity for labor was
prodigious, and he could sit down at any hour of the day or night and write a
paragraph or an article on any topic. At the same time, he was correspondent of
four English journals, and did much to influence British opinion during the
Civil War.
In 1868, Mr. Charles Scribner offered Mr. Seymour a position in his publishing
bouse, and be became a partner of the house after Mr. Scribner's death. He had
charge of its literary business, such as passing on manuscripts and dealing with
authors, a labor for which his tact and gentleness well fitted him. Though his
name did not always appear, many excellent articles in Scribner's Magazine and
elsewhere were from his pen. "All who knew him not only respected him for his
talents, but loved him for his beautiful character." He was modest and
unobtrusive; and deeply religious. His father was a Presbyterian minister; his
father-in-law was Rev. Dr. Sherwood, of the Presbyterian and Princeton Review.
