23. Capt. Jonathan Seymour

23. CAPT. JONATHAN4 SEYMOUR (John3, John2, Richard1), of Hartford, Conn., born at Hartford 16 Mar. 1702/3, died there 30 Sept. 1776. He married at Hartford, 27 May 1725, MARY4 BULL, who was born at Hartford 10 Nov. 1707, and died there, being buried 3 Feb. 1786, daughter of Daniel3 (Joseph2, Thomas1) and Mary (Mygatt) and sister of Keziah Bull who married Zebulon Seymour (25), a brother of Jonathan.

Jonathan Seymour was one of the prominent men of Hartford, holding many town offices and serving on numerous committees. He was Tythingman of the South Society, 1728 and 1730, and Grandjuryman, 1731. He was chosen Ensign of the Second Military Company 7 May 1744, Lieutenant of the same company 4 May 1752, and Captain 6 May 1754. He was appointed Captain of the 9th Co. in the regiment of Militia raised for the French War in 1756, and in Oct. 1756 was appointed Captain of a company raised in Hartford County to join the 1st Regt. then in camp near Crown Point.

In his will, dated 30 Mar. 1772, he names his wife Mary, his only son Israel, his daughters Millescent Wadsworth, Mary, wife of Seth Austin of Suffield [Conn.], Magdalen, wife of Barnabas Hinsdale of Hartford, and Delight, wife of Roswell Wattles of Suffield, and also two grandsons, Horace and Ardon Seymour, the only children of his son Jonathan, late deceased.

In his will, dated 3 Apr. 1806, Seth Austin of Suffield names his wife Mary, his sons Seth, James, and Thaddeus R. Austin, the sons of his son Jonathan S. Austin, viz-. Horace and John S. Austin, his daughter Mehitabel Austin, his daughter Susanna Austin, his son Roderick, his daughter Delight Fairman, his daughter Mary Ewing, and his son Calvin. His daughters Mary Ewing, Mehitabel Austin, and Susanna Austin are called “unmarried.” Division of the estate was made 24 May 1809 to Mrs. Hetty G. Fairman, Mrs. Susan Lewis, and others as above.
